Hindus are disappointed over recently held Synod of Sydney Anglican Diocese (SAD) reportedly banning yoga classes on the church property.

This reported ban means no yoga on over 400 Anglican churches/congregations and 41 schools/colleges across Sydney Metropolitan, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, South Coast and Illawarra areas.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, urged SAD lead by Archbishop Glenn Davies to show some maturity by re-visiting the issue and not deprive students of its schools/colleges, congregants and other property users the valuable opportunities the multi-beneficial yoga provided.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that such attempts to ban yoga would leave many in 21st century multicultural Australia seriously disappointed, embarrassed and unhappy; many of whom might like to explore various valuable benefits yoga offered. He urged Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Anglican Church of Australia Primate Dr. Philip Leslie Freier to intervene in this matter to allow yoga classes on SAD properties to bring goodwill among the communities.

Rajan Zed also urged Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and New South Wales (NSW) Premier Gladys Berejiklian to look into how SAD could ban ancient and highly useful practice of yoga from its schools/colleges, as these reportedly received funding from Commonwealth and NSW governments. United Nations proclaimed June 21 as International Day of Yoga to raise awareness worldwide of its many benefits.

Yoga, referred as “a living fossil”, was a mental and physical discipline, for everybody to share and benefit from, whose traces went back to around 2,000 BCE to Indus Valley civilization, Zed pointed out.

Rajan Zed further said that yoga, although introduced and nourished by Hinduism, was a world heritage and liberation powerhouse to be utilized by all. According to Patanjali who codified it in Yoga Sutra, yoga was a methodical effort to attain perfection, through the control of the different elements of human nature, physical and psychical.

According to US National Institutes of Health; yoga may help one to feel more relaxed, be more flexible, improve posture, breathe deeply, and get rid of stress. According to a “2016 Yoga in America Study”, about 37 million Americans (which included many celebrities) now practice yoga; and yoga is strongly correlated with having a positive self image. Yoga was the repository of something basic in the human soul and psyche, Zed added.

Rajan Zed stresses that in our shared pursuit for the truth; we can learn from one another and thus can arrive nearer to the truth. Zed invited Davies to study a treatise on yoga and attend few yoga classes to have firsthand experience of yoga.

Anglican Church came to Australia in 1788. SAD’s Mission includes “love our neighbor”.
