COMPLETE BAN ON ELECTION CAMPAIGNING DURING LAST 48 HOURS: CHIEF ELECTORAL OFFICER

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Punjab, Dr. S. Karuna Raju today said that in accordance with the directions applicable 48 hours before voting process, the election campaigning is completely banned during last 48 hours duration. Dr. Raju further said that as per the section 126 of the Representation of People's Act, 1951 during these 48 hours it is strictly prohibited to chalk out, organize, be a part of, address or take part in any election related public meeting and processions. Apart from this, showing of anything having remotest connection to the elections through films, or TV to the voters is also banned in totality.

Divulging more, Dr. Raju said that holding entertainment programmes, Organizing plays or musical programmes is also under the ambit of ban.

The CEO also detailed that anybody violating the above mentioned section would face imprisonment upto 2 years, Fine or both.

The CEO also made it clear that there would be no ban on the door to door campaigning and also that this activity must be carried out as per the Section 144 applicable in the districts and the Section 126 of the Representation of People's Act, 1951.
