LAW CONVOCATION OF UILS AND DEPTT OF LAWS: SUPREME COURT JUDGE JUSTICE SURYA KANT AWARDED DEGREES

The 4th Law Convocation of the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) five year integrated law honours course and Department of Laws took place at the Gymnasium Hall of the Panjab University on Saturday.

The eminent jurist and Judge, Supreme Court of India, Hon’ble Justice Surya Kant was the chief guest for the occasion. The function was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Prof (Dr) Raj Kumar. Hon’ble Justice Rajiv Sharma, Hon’ble Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain and Hon’ble Justice Mrs Daya Choudhary, judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court were Guests of Honour on the occasion. Prof.Shankarji Jha, DUI, PU; Ms Anu Chatrath, senior advocate and Dean Faculty of Law, PU; Prof Rattan Singh, Director, UILS; Prof Meenu Paul, Chairperson, Dept of Laws and Prof. Harminder S. Bains, PUSSGRC Hoshiarpur graced the dais, along with the honoured guests.

Almost 800 post graduate and graduate students from both UILS and the Department of Laws were awarded degrees on the occasion. UILS students who passed out in 2016, 2017 and 2018 received their degrees. The academic procession was lead by the Vice Chancellor and the honourable Judge and Justices, and comprised of the faculty of both the Department of Laws and UILS.The function had an auspicious beginning with the melodious Panjab University anthem reverberating in the huge hall. The lighting of the lamp of learning and homage to Goddess Saraswati added to the atmosphere of sombre elation, sanctity and positive vibes which pervaded the auditorium.

After the dignitaries had been accorded a floral welcome, an audio video presentation outlining the achievements and events that had marked the academic calendar of the departments in the past year was played to apprise the guests and audience with the activities of UILS and Departmentof Laws. Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr) Raj Kumar in his welcome address lauded both the UILS and Department of Laws for their prolific achievements year after year. He welcomed the eminent jurists, guests and students and expressed the hope that students would continue to achieve more milestones and spread the lustre of Panjab University to all parts of India and across the globe.
In her address, Senior Advocate Ms Anu Chatrath, who is the Dean Faculty of Laws, welcomed the attending dignitariesand students. She further expressed her sincere appreciation of the commendable work being done by the Departments and the meritorious students who never fail to win laurels for the departments. She also announced that 23 medal winners would be awarded a cash award of Rs 2100 each under the aegis of the Shri G. K Chatrath Memorial Fund.

In his introduction to UILS, the honourable Director, Prof Rattan Singh apprised the audience of the plethora of achievements, events and activities of UILS in brief. UILS is one of the most sought after programmes which is growing by leaps and bounds every year and steadily climbing up the national rankings. Prof Rattan Singh credited the faculty and students for their unremitting hard work and commitment which has made UILS shine so bright. He congratulated the students who were about to receive their degrees and thanked them for contributing positively to upholding the image of UILS and being praise worthy ambassadors of the programme.

In her introductory remarks, the Chairperson of the Department of Laws Prof Meenu Paul spoke at length about the various laurels that had been won by the students and the calendar of events and activities organised during the immediate time span preceding the convocation.

Hon’ble Justice Surya Kant, the chief guest for the occasion, in his convocation address congratulated the post graduate and graduate students who were receiving their degrees. Justice Surya Kant reemphasised the high ideals and ethics that rule the profession and practise of law and enjoined the students to always practise pristine standards of personal and professional conduct so as to uphold the unimpeachable freedom, relevance and prestige of the judiciary.

He reminded the gathering of the time honoured role of the judiciary as a pillar of democracy, safeguard of the rule of law and preserver of individual dignity and freedom. In today’s fast paced world, where there is rapid advancement and change in every aspect of life, Justice Surya Kant reminded the students of the need to be ever vigilant and alert to the changing realities and always fight for the marginalised and the under priviledged. He expressed the confidence that the students receiving the degrees would always remain committed to the ideals of the noble calling of Law.

Post the chief guest’s address, the process of the conferring of the degrees began and the students processed in well ordered queues to receive their degrees from the prominent jurists and University luminaries. The entire ceremony was carried out with meticulous precision and efficiency and concluded with the presentation of mementoes to the eminent guests who had graced the occasion.

The vote of thanks was presented by the respected Registrar of Panjab University, Prof (Dr) Karamjeet Singh who expressed the gratitude of the Faculty, students and staff of both departments to the honoured Justice Surya Kant and all the prominent guests who had travelled from far and wide to participate in the occasion. He congratulated the students who has received their degrees and lauded the efforts of both UILS and the Department of Laws for their seminal achievements and continued pursuit of excellence.

Vikram Singh Security Officer PU is also awarded LLB (3 years) degree in Law Convocation today. He has completed B. Tech, (Indian Air Force), M.A. ( Public Administration) M.B.A. (HRD). He has served 20 years prestigious Indian Air Force and presently serving since11 years in the PU Chandigarh.

The function concluded with the sounds of the National Anthem reverberating in the Hall. The wide smiles, jubilant mood and upbeat atmosphere attested to the joy and sense of achievement which was being felt by all the students who received their degrees. The hard work and dedication of the various committees who had worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the success of the function was apparent in the smooth and seamless conduct of the event.

The Seating and discipline committee was headed by Dr Sasha and Dr Meenu Saihjpal, the Stage and announcement Committee headed by Dr Navneet Arora, Invitation Committee headed by Dr Sarabjit Kaur, the Decoration Committee headed by Dr Karan Jawanda, Tentage Committee headed by Dr Bharat, Food Committee headed by Dr Anju Berwal, On the spot registration headed by Dr Abha Sethi, Reception of dignitaries committee was headed by Prof Sangita Bhalla, Distribution of degrees committee was headed by Mr Naresh, Cleanliness committee was headed by Ms Sulbha Setia, Wearing of Gowns was handled by Mr Deepak Thakur and Press release Committee was headed by Prof Geeta Joshi.The keen involvement and exemplary dedication with which the faculty, staff and students contributed to the event ensured its success and smooth conduct.
