Taking up the long-pending demand of kinnow fruit growers, Union Minister of Food Processing Harsimrat Kaur Badal has requested Railway Minister Piyush Goyal to provide a dedicated Kisan Rail with refrigerated bogies from Abohar to Bangalore and Abohar to Kolkata during the kinnow picking season from December to March.

“I have been assured by the farmers and traders of the area that the train will be utilized to full capacity and would be viable venture for the railways as well, she said in a letter, copy of which was received here also. She said it will be boon for the kinnow farmers of states of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan and will significantly improve potential of this fruit to Bangladesh and other South-east Asian countries.

She said it will be boon for the kinnow farmers of states of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan and will significantly improve potential of this fruit to Bangladesh and other South-east Asian countries.

Badal said owing to its taste, kinnow has created a niche market abroad. Indian cities of Bangalore and Kolkata are the biggest markets for Punjab’s kinnow, in deciding the pricing of the fruit. Significant quantity is also exported to Bangladesh. Abohar acts as the focal market for aggregation of kinnow and handles produce of over 25 LMT per annum even as the cluster of three states registers a net fruit area of over 1 lac hectare.

However, she added, due to highly perishable nature of this fruit, only 35-40 percent of the fruit reaches the end consumers. The rest gets wasted due to the high temperature during the road transport over long distances leading to loss for farmers. The problem is even more acute in the peak harvesting months of February and March as the temperature start rising in the southern and eastern states. Thus, Kisan Rail will ensure seamless connectivity between farmers and consumers, Harsimrat said.
