Haryana Minister of Home Affairs Mr. Anil Vij said that strict action will be taken against officers, employees, contractors involved in the illicit sale of liquor or persons involved in liquor mafia in the state.

Mr. Vij said this on the 2nd day of Haryana Vidhan Sabha session today in response to a calling attention motion. Divulging more details he said that the matter came to light during lockdown and subsequently an FIR was registered in Samalkha under various Sections of the IPC and the Excise Act by Haryana Police and the prime accused Ashok Jain was arrested with regard to illicit sale of liquor.

The Home Minister said that to ensure thorough investigation in this case the State Vigilance Bureau has been asked to investigate it on the basis of a report submitted by the Special Enquiry Team (SET), which was constituted for cases pertaining to illicit sale of liquor.

Mr. Vij said that the Special Enquiry Team (SET) was headed by senior IAS officer Mr. T.C. Gupta was constituted on May 11, 2020. Additional Director General of Police, Mr. Subhash Yadav and Additional Excise Commissioner, Mr. Vijay Singh were its members. IPS officer, Mr. Mohammad Akil was made a member of SET after the superannuation of Mr. Subhash Yadav. The SET submitted its report on July 30, 2020.

The Home Minister said that the SET has recommended disciplinary action against some officers and departmental action against others.

He appreciated the work of the SET and said that the team has conducted a thorough investigation and submitted a report in this regard. The SET also gave information about some employees and officers of the Police and Excise Department who were not discharging their responsibilities properly. A committee has been constituted in this regard under the chairmanship of ADGP, Mr. Kala Ramchandran who will investigate the involvement of various employees and officers in the said case.

Mr. Vij said that strict action is taken on complaints received. He further added that on the basis of news published in a newspaper an inquiry was conducted and an SHO in Sonipat district was suspended. He said that during the tenure of the previous governments, there have been cases of people dying by drinking poisonous liquor. However, strict action is being taken by our government to curtail such cases.
