CBI ARRESTS A CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER OF NORTH EAST FRONTIER RAILWAY, FOUR OTHERS IN BRIBERY AND RECOVERS CASH OF 2.39 CRORE

The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Chief Administrative Officer (a Senior Railway Officer), Construction-II, North East Frontier Railway(NFR), Maligaon(Assam); a Deputy Chief Engineer, NFR, Agartala; an Assistant Executive Engineer, N.F. Railway(NFR), Agartala(Tripura); an employee of private company based at Guwahati(Assam) and a private person(relative of CAO, North-East Frontier Railway) in an on-going investigation of a case related to alleged bribery of Rs.One crore. 

During searches, another sum of Rs.18.5 lakh(approx) and Rs.6.5 lakh(approx) have been recovered from the premises of Deputy Chief Engineer and Assistant Executive Engineer(AEN) respectively. Thus, a total amount of Rs.2.39 crore(approx) has been recovered. This includes an alleged bribe of Rs.One crore, which exchanged hands yesterday, is stated to be one of the biggest bribe money trapped. In addition, Rs.60 lakh was recovered from Dehradun and Rs.54 lakh from Guwahati premises of CAO, yesterday. Besides this, there has been recovery of jewellery and documents related to property from this locations.

CBI had yesterday busted a major corruption racket. It was alleged that some senior public functionaries of North East Frontier Railways were involved in corrupt practices with private contractors for the on-going projects in the North East Frontier Railways. The contractors were allegedly being facilitated in awarding the contracts processing of subsequent bills, release of payments etc. by the public functionaries in lieu of illegal gratifications.Investigation and searches are continuing.

Searches were conducted at 26 locations including at Delhi, Uttrakhand, Assam, Tripura and West Bengal.

It may be noted that CBI has registered a case against a Senior Railway Officer - Chief Administrative Officer/Construction-II, North East Frontier Railways, Maligaon(Assam) & others including a Deputy Chief Engineer; an Assistant Executive Engineer (AEN); a Director & an employee of a private company based at Guwahati; a private person and unknown others under relevant sections of IPC and PC Act. It was alleged that the accused were abusing their official position for obtaining illegal gratification.

It was further alleged that the said Director of private company was in contact with said CAO in various on-going projects in NFR region. It was also alleged that on his demand, the said Director through his employee got delivered bribe of Rs.One crore to the relative (private person) of said CAO at his residence in Dehradun. The accused allegedly exchanging bribe money were caught yesterday. The alleged bribe of Rs.One crore was recovered.
