Having a track record of pursuing people unfriendly policies, the Chandigarh MC has come out with yet another with the steep hike in the water charges. It will not be out of place to mention for reference a few like unreasonably hiked rates of lease hold properties for which there are hardly any takers and a large number of booths constructed by MC have no buyers. Property tax, electricity charges and you can add many others to the list.

Coming back to the issue under discussion, the water charges are highest compared to the tricity constituents viz Mohali and Panchkula.

It is pertinent to highlight here that when the source of supply for water in tricity is common then why the Chandigarh MC charging rates in excess. For the purpose of recalling the arrangements, In 1983 agreement of water distribution from Bhakra through Kajauli, it was signed that it will be supplied to Mohali, Chandigarh, Chandi mandir and Panchkula. As such higher rates imposed on the Chandigarh residents are unjustified.

As per information furnished by MC Chandigarh, the Analysis of Water tariffs applicable in UT vis a vis old rates, is given hereunder: (All the rates are Bi Monthly and include Sewerage cess 30%, Maintenance Charges, Meter rent but does not include COW cess imposed recently)

It is pertinent to highlight here that when the source of supply for water in tricity is common then why the Chandigarh MC charging rates in excess. 1. At the consumption of 25 KL PM as per old rates bio monthly water bill was Rs 232.00 whereas as per new rates water bill is Rs 323.00 as such there is increase of Rs 91.00 i.e 39.22 % So New Bill is 139.22% of old bill

2. At the consumption of 50 KL PM as per old rates bi monthly water bill was Rs 596.00 whereas as per new rates water bill is Rs 1025.00 as such there is increase of Rs 429.00 i.e 71.97 % So New Bill is 171.97 % of old bill

4. At the consumption of 150 KL PM as per old rates bio monthly water bill was Rs 2624.00 whereas as per new artes water bill is Rs 6923.00 as such there is increase of Rs 4329.00 i.e 164.97 % So New Bill is 264.97 % of old bill

5. At the consumption of 200 KL PM as per old rates bio monthly water bill was Rs 3664.00 whereas as per new rates water bill is Rs 10073.00 as such there is increase of Rs 6409.00 i.e 174.19 % So New Bill is 274.19 % of old bill

6. At the consumption of 300 KL PM as per old rates bio monthly water bill was Rs 5744.00 whereas as per new rates water bill is Rs 16313.00 as such there is increase of Rs 10569.00 i.e 184% % So New Bill is 284. % of old bill

The MC had decided to increase water charges by 100 percentage only which has been increased from 39% to 184 % not as declared to consumers

MOHALI: Water charges in Mohali are as follows:

1.Residential Rs 1.8 per KL and Sewerage charges 30 per seat for consumption of 230 KL two month one gets bill of Rs 414.00 only

2.For Commercial Rs 5.00 per KL and Sewerage Rs 60 per seat for consumption of 325 KL two months one gets bill of Rs 1630 only

PANCHKULA:

The water tariff in Panchkula were last revised in Jan 2018 (earlier rates were high as notified in April 2017 and when Panchkula people protested than rates were revised down wards

At present rates applicable are as under (Metered)

1.starting with 2.5 per KL upto 10 KL

2.From 11-20 KL residents have to pay Rs 5 per KL for next 10 KL

3.Rates are Rs 8.00 per KL from 21-30 for total water consumption

4.Finally Rs 10 per KL above 30 KL of the total water consumption

The sewerage Charges are 20% of the water bills

A consumption of 305 KL in Panchkula water gets a bill of Rs 1211.00 including 20% Sewerage Charge

A consumption of 50 KL in Panchkula water gets a bill of Rs 273.00 including 20% Sewerage Charge

What warrants the Chandigarh MC to impose highest rates compared to other two constituents of tricity id beyond apprehension. We appeal that the rates be slashed down to reasonable limits with immediate effect. The Chandigarh MC must manage its finances prudently instead of imposing charges on the residents every now and then. This tendency reflects poorly on the credibility and even the very existence and necessity of MC for Chandigarh. There is hardly any noteworthy contribution of MC for the residents.
