Punjab and Haryana High Court  restrains the Government from cutting trees standing on either side of link road from Kahneke to Rureehke Kalan under the grab of road widening- “If trees pose some hindrance, modify the road widening plan for saving those trees”-says HC:

In a PIL filed by environment lover and social activist, H.C.Arora, advocate, the Bench of Chief Justice and Justice Arun Palli today directed the respondent-State to take a decision with due application of mind, on the demand notice dated July 19th, where in the petitioner had stated that road between Kahneke and Rurehke Kalan (Barnala) which is 10 feet wide, is being widened to 18th feet (i.e., four feet extra on either side.)

Taking the matter very seriously, the HC Bench directed the respondents that demand notice submitted by petitioner on July 19th, against cutting of trees be first decided. It was made clear by the HC that no trees shall be cut till the decision of demand notice dated July 19th, in any case, if some trees may be coming within the proposed widened road of 18 feet width, it may be considered to modify the road widening plan, so as to save the trees.

In fact, the road is 27th feet wide, including kacha portion. Approximately 900 grown up trees ( which were planted by the youth of the area) are standing on either side of the road, which are standing on the extreme corners of the road, after gap of 4.5 feet each, beyond proposed 18th feet width of this link road. It was alleged by the petitioner that the PWD (B&R) department , through its Contractor, is threatening to cut these 900 trees, although these trees do not stand in the way of vehicular traffic, even if the road is widened to 18 feet ( from existing 10 feet width).

The PIL stands disposed in the above terms.
