FOUR YEARS RI TO THEN PROTECTOR OF EMIGRANTS AND A PRIVATE PERSON FOR POSSESSING DISPROPORTIONATE ASSETS

The Special Judge for CBI Cases, Chennai sentenced R. Sekar, IRS officer (1992 Batch), then Protector of Emigrants, Chennai and Anwar Hussain, Proprietor of M/s Classic Tours & Travels, Chennai, both to undergo four years Rigorous Imprisonment in a case of disproportionate assets. A total fine of Rs. 6.10 lakh was also imposed on them.

CBI had registered the case against Shri R. Sekar, IRS, then Protector of Emigrants, Chennai; his wife and Shri Anwar Hussain (private person) on the allegations of possessing disproportionate assets. It was alleged that during the period from 01.01.2007 to 20.07.2009, Shri R. Sekar & his wife entered into a conspiracy among themselves to acquire ill-gotten wealth to the tune of Rs 2,08,42,316/- (approx.) which were disproportionate to their known sources of income.

It was further alleged that the acquisition & possession of these assets by Shri Sekar & his wife was abetted by Shri Anwar Hussain, a travel agent. It was also alleged that Shri R. Sekar had appointed Shri Anwar Hussain Travel Agent as conduit for collection of bribe in the form of speed money for issuing Emigration clearance.

After investigation, CBI filed a chargesheet against the accused for possessing assets to the tune of Rs. 2,08,42,316/- which was 471.05% disproportionate to the known sources of income.

The Trial Court found both the accused guilty and convicted them. The Court has acquitted the wife of said public servant.
