RANJEET MURDER: CBI SPECIAL COURT OF PANCHKULA TO PRONOUNCE SENTENCE TO DERA CHIEF GURMIT RAM RAHEEM SINGH TODAY

Panchkula Administration imposed section 144 of Cr PC as CBI Special Court will pronounce sentence to Dera Sacha Saudha Chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh. who was landing in Sunaria Jail in Rohtak in a rape case and murder of a journalist, in Ex Manager Dera Sacha Saudha Sauda Ranjeet Singh. 

Ranjit Singh, a former follower of Ram Rahim, was shot dead by four assailants on July 10, 2002, at his native Khanpur Kolian village in Kurukshetra. As per the CBI, he was murdered as Ram Rahim suspected that he was behind the circulation of an anonymous letter highlighting the sexual exploitation of female disciples on the Dera premises.

Ram Rahim was sentenced in August 2017 to 20 years of imprisonment in connection with raping two of his women followers and the murder of a journalist. He is currently lodged in Rohtak’s Sunaria jail serving a life term.(SUBHEAD)

There are mainly three cases of the period 2002-03 registered against the Sirsa-based Dera chief. In two cases, one related to sexual exploitation of female disciples and the second of the murder of a journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, Ram Rahim has been convicted. The third case is of Ranjit Singh’s murder. Earlier this month, the Punjab and Haryana high court dismissed a plea seeking transfer of trial in the Ranjit Singh murder case terming the allegations imaginary and based on surmises and conjectures.

The high court bench observed that on mere apprehension trial cannot be transferred and that apprehension must be reasonable and not imaginary. The power of transfer is to be sparingly exercised. Thus, the trial court was granted the power to pronounce judgment, which it exercised on Friday convicting Ram Rahim and four others in the Rajit Singh murder case.  

The other accused beside Dera Chief namely Krishan Lal,  Sabdil Singh, Jasbir Singh &  Avtar Singh, guilty in the murder of  Ranjit Singh resident of Village Khanpur Kolian(Kurukshetra). 

CBI had registered the said case on the orders dated 10.11.2003 passed by the Hon'ble High Court of Punjab & Haryana passed in Crl. Misc. Nos. 26994-M of 2002, 7931-M of 2003 & 24874-M of 2003 and taken over the investigation of the case earlier registered vide FIR No. 312/2002 at Police Station Sadar, Thanesar (Kurukshetra). It was alleged that Shri Ranjit Singh resident of Village Khanpur Kolian (Kurukshetra) was murdered on 10.7.2002 when he was working in his fields at village Khanpur Kolian, District Kurukshetra(Haryana). 

After thorough investigation, CBI filed a charge-sheet on 30.07.2007 against 6 accused and charges were framed on 12.12.2008. During the pendency of trial, one accused expired on 08.10.2020 and trial proceedings were abated against him.
