The Safai Sewak Union of the Municipal Corporation today agreed to end its week-long strike after their five-member action committee discussed the prevailing situation at a meeting with Mayor Vimal Thatai.
The Union had complained that safai sewaks were not paid salary on regular basis and were also denied salary for October last year under the “no work, no pay” formula as they had observed strike ruing delay in paying wages.

In the past week, members of the union staged dharna near the entrance to the corporation complex, took out protest march and returned the certificates of appreciation that the MC had given to them in lieu of their contribution in Swachhta Abhiyan.

Speaking to the safai sewaks later at the dharna site in the presence of councillor Narinder Verma, the Mayor said that Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had announced that safai sewaks (sanitation workers) will get weekly off besides all gazetted holidays on a par with other government employees, the successive governments in the past had not even considered this demand.

Since salary was delayed only when the MC does not receive its share out of GST from the state government due to some technical glitches, safai sewaks should bear with the situation as they too were responsible citizens. He cautioned they should not get misled by non-Congress parties which had done nothing else than shedding crocodile tears in the past. As dengue was threatening to spread, it was our moral duty to keep the town clean, he added.
