DELHI CBI SPECIAL COURT TO PRONOUNCE PUNISHMENT TO INLD CHIEF OM PARKASH CHAUTALA ON MAY 27

Delhi's Rouge Avenue Court will pronounced punishment to INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala on May 27. Chautala had been convicted in a disproportionate assets case.

The Court on Wednesday heard arguements from both sides.

Chautala's lawyer, citing his paralysis and illness, urged the CBI court to be lenient. On the other side, the CBI lawyer said that Chautala should be given strict punishment. The court heard both sides and reserved the verdict for Friday at 2.00 pm.

OP Chautala's lawyer defending him said that I am handicapped from birth, I have asthma in jail, I have also been in custody in this case. My paralysis is increasing, from 60 per cent to 90 per cent. 

CBI counsel opposed Chautala's brokerage, poor health should be treated but maximum punishment should be given. He further said that the post held by Chautala is of great importance, he was a leader elected by the people, nothing happens when a peon signs but a lot changes when a ruler signs. Maximum punishment is necessary to give a proper message to the common people. The CBI lawyer said that corruption is like cancer for the society, in case of corruption the court should give such punishment so that it can set an example in the society. 

On this the court said, do you have 90% disability certificate? Then the lawyer said, no, it is 60 per cent, paralysis is increasing, there is asthma. I have many health ailments. My treatment is also going on in Medanta of Gurgaon. I also have heart disease, and I have a pacemaker. Chautala's lawyer gave information about his medical history in the court.

Chautala's lawyer said that I also have an infection in my lungs, which is being treated. Citing the Supreme Court's decision, Chautala's counsel said that if the accused is paralyzed, the court may consider giving lesser sentence on humanitarian grounds.

Chautala's lawyer further said that keeping in view his age, health and disability, at least punishment should be given. Also look at Chautala's good behavior in jail. Even in this case, he never asked the court to adjourn the hearing. Has always cooperated in the court process. Chautala is accused of amassing wealth in excess of his income between 1993-2006. This time is more than 20 years. In the meantime, he has always cooperated in the investigation.

WHAT CBI COUNCIL SAID:
