26th June is celebrated as ‘International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking and commonly known as ‘World Drug Day’. To mark this day Narcotics Control Bureau is organizing “Nasha Se Azaadi Pakhwada” from 12 - 26th June, 2022.
Today , first ‘Neon Run’ to be organized by a Govt. Department in Chandigarh was done by Narcotics Control Bureau, Chandigarh Zonal Unit in association with Chandigarh Police from Chandigarh Club, Sector 1 to Sukhna Lake and back.
The ‘Nashe se Azadi Neon Run’ was flagged off by His Excellency Sh. Banwari Lal Purohit Governor Punjab & UT Administrator. During this, Sh. Dharampal Advisor to Administrator, Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav Home Secretary (UT), Praveer Ranjan DGP Chandigarh Police & Sh. Gyaneshwar Singh , NCB Northern Zone Deputy Director General were also present. Sh. Gyaneshwar Singh, Deputy Director General, NCB Northern Zone said that We have got together to take a pledge against drugs menace. Through this campaign we are trying to make the people aware. This is a joint effort of Chandigarh police and NCB.”
The 5 km ‘Nashe se Azadi Neon Run’ started from Chandigarh Club, reached Sukhna Lake and then returned to Chandigarh Club, spreading awareness amongst the youth of the ill effects of drug abuse. During this, great enthusiasm was seen among the youth. Participants from NCC , SFI, BSF , Punjab Police , NCB, Chandigarh Police , CRPF, ITBP besides from various schools , colleges & universities took part. SBI,IOCL,THE LALIT,NESTLE & PEPSI were part of the event. Over 5000 people participated in the neon run.
Punjab Governor cum UT Administrator Banwari Lal Purohit, while speaking on the occasion said today’s programme is very important for the nation. It is a international conspiracy to weaken our country as drugs are smuggled. He added such campaigns help in creating awareness. “If you ever get to know about drugs report the police and do not be afraid of that. Drugs should not be able to reach us at any cost”, he said. He lauded the efforts of NCB and Chandigarh police and said we must pledge to make efforts to remove this menace from our country. He said every young person has to play a positive role in guiding those into drugs by making it a mission which will be a great contribution to the country.
Sh. Gyaneshwar Singh, Deputy Director General, NCB Northern Zone said that We have got together to take a pledge against drugs menace. Through this campaign we are trying to make the people aware. This is a joint effort of Chandigarh police and NCB.”
He thanked the Governor for taking out time adding that this fight is fought in a two pronged manner - we catch hold of those in this trade but India is not just a transit country but a consumer also and people have to be made aware to check this. You have to decide we need a drug free Punjab.
He also told that before the Neon Run, a road run/road relay was organized on June 12 at Sukhna Lake, in which the 600 runners & 2000 tri city residents enthusiastically participated. Besides this, various competitions to spread awareness among the youth about drug abuse are being undertaken by NCB Chandigarh Unit, including 5 minute Pocket Movie Making Competition on the ill effects of drugs and E-Pledge Competition across three states namely Punjab , Himachal Pradesh & Harayana & UT of Chandigarh .
These events are getting a overwhelming response from the people of all walks of life especially the youth. Similarly, NCB, Sub-Region Amritsar and Mandi are also organizing various programs to create awareness about the ill effects of drugs, he added.
