DIGITAL ARREST BY HYDERABADIS POSING FAKE POLICE OFFICERS, CHEATED 57.90 LAKH NOW REMANDED TO POLICE CUSTODY

The team of Cyber Police Station Panchkula working under the direction of Police Commissioner Shivas Kaviraj and DCP Crime and Traffic Manpreet Singh Sudan has arrested two accused who cheated Rs 59.90 lakh in the name of "Digital Arrest".

DCP Crime Manpreet Singh Sudan said that in a case registered at Police Station Cyber Crime Panchkula on July 21, 83-year-old Rajendra, a resident of Sector-16 Panchkula, had complained that he had been cheated through digital threats. The victim said that he is retired from HMT.

At 12 noon on January 16, he received a WhatsApp call from a person identifying himself as an officer of the police headquarters in Hyderabad, saying that a serious case of money transfer was registered against him and that he would have to reach Hyderabad in two hours.

When the victim expressed his inability to come, he was informed through a video call that a person named "Goyal" had fraudulently fled abroad and the victim's Aadhaar card was found to be linked to him. On this pretext, they were digitally "arrested" and threatened to remain in front of the camera until the investigation was completed and not to divulge this information to anyone, otherwise their lives would be in danger.

In this way, by spreading fear and confusion, the thugs kept the victim under mental control for three consecutive days and cheated a total of 57 lakh 90 thousand rupees from his various bank accounts. When the victim realized the fraud, he immediately filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime Station, Panchkula. The police registered a case under sections 316(2), 318(4), and 319 of the Indian Code of Justice and started investigation.

The case is being investigated by Sub-Inspector Saurabh Singh. Two accused Manish son of Ramesh and Amit son of Satbir were arrested from Dadoli village of district Hisar on July 29 while acting under the leadership of the police team, cyber police station in-charge Inspector Yudhveer.

DCP Crime further informed that  both the accused have been produced in the honorable court and taken on 5 days police remand. During the police remand, the accused will be thoroughly interrogated to recover their mobile phones, bank accounts, digital transactions, other co-accused and the entire amount of the fraud.
