THE INDIAN ARMY TO HOST SPITI MARATHON 2025 AT 10,000–14,000 FT FROM AUGUST 22–24

The Indian Army is organising the second edition of Surya Spiti Challenge - Spiti Marathon 2025 which is scheduled for August 22–24, 2025 at the Lahaul & Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. This marathon is offering runners from around the world an extraordinary opportunity to compete in one of the highest altitude marathons on the planet. With four race categories—including the 77 km Kunzum La Ultra, 42 km Full Marathon, 21 km Half Marathon and 10 km run as the event blends endurance, adventure and Himalayan panoramas in the quaint valley of Spiti. 

Organised under Operation Sadbhavana by the Indian Army, Spiti Marathon 2025 represents a mission to showcase the power of sport, community and India's Himalayan frontier. This year’s event builds on the legacy of the inaugural High Altitude Marathon in Spiti which was first held on September 28–29, 2024 with the similar objectives 

A total of Rs 30 lakh prize money will be on stake across all categories. Registration is now open to athletes, civilians and defense personnel. A required medical examination during Bib collection ensures all runners are fit for high altitude. 

The previous edition saw participation from nearly 650 athletes, while this year the number is expected to reach 2,000. The last date for registration is August 9.

Organised as part of Operation Sadbhavana,the Spiti Marathon is an initiative to promote adventure sports in high-altitude terrain, strengthen civil-military bonds, and highlight the strategic and cultural importance of the Spiti Valley. It reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to nation-building beyond traditional roles. 

The event is being supported by HP Govt, District Administrations, Himachal Tourism alongwith other stakeholders.
