Members of the Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial Committee, which had played an instrumental role in installing the life-size statue of martyr Udham Singh in the city area, today submitted a memorandum to the police demanding strict action against a few unidentified miscreants for the alleged desecration of the martyr’s statue.
Bhagwan Singh, president of the Memorial Committee, said that late Sunday night, after the Indian team defeated New Zealand in the T-20 World Cup final, a group of youths reached the spot and created a ruckus. He alleged that some persons even went near the statue and acted in a manner that amounted to insulting the martyr’s memorial.

“The videos of the incident later went viral on social media and hurt the sentiments of people associated with Shaheed Udham Singh,” said Bhagwan Singh, adding that while people have every right to celebrate the country’s victory, they must also remember and respect the sacrifices made by the martyrs.
DSP Sukhwinder Singh said that an appropriate action shall be taken against the accused.
