FINAL FAREWELL TO PROF BC VERMA WITH TEARFUL TRIBUTES

PROMINENT PERSONALITIES INCLUDING CABINET MINISTERS SHARED CONDOLENCES WITH CHIEF SECRETARY ANURAG VERMA

During the last rites of Prof BC Verma, father of Punjab Chief Secretary Mr. Anurag Verma, a large number of prominent personalities including Cabinet Ministers of Punjab paid their respects to the departed soul.

On behalf of the Punjab Government, Cabinet Ministers Mr. Harpal Singh Cheema and Mr. Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer and on behalf of the Chief Minister, his OSD Mr. Rajbir Singh Ghuman offered tributes by placing a wreath. On this occasion, Cabinet Ministers Mr. Aman Arora, Mr. Lal Chand Kataruchak, Mr. Bram Shankar Jimpa and Mr. Balkar Singh also shared their grief with Mr. Verma.

Prof. BC Verma, who was 89 years old, passed away this morning at P.G.I. Chandigarh after a brief illness. Prof. Verma's funeral pyre was lit by his two sons Mr. Anurag Verma and Mr. Ashish Verma during his last rites at the cremation ground in Sector 25. Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, Chief Minister Office officials, Punjab and Haryana High Court Judges, Civil, Police and Army officials, U.T. administration officials, retired officers, Advocates and representatives of the Press, leaders of various political parties, social organizations and secretariat officials and employees were also present at the Occasion.

On this occasion, Chief Minister's OSD (Media) Mr. Adil Azmi, OSD (PR) Mr. Manjit Sidhu, Director Media Relations Mr. Baltej Singh Pannu, Adviser to UT Administrator Mr. Dharam Pal, IAS Officers Association President Mr. Tejveer Singh on behalf of the assosiation, D.G.P. Mr. Gaurav Yadav, Vigilance Director Mr. Varinder Kumar, Advocate General Mr. Vinod Ghai, Secretary DIPR Mr. Malwinder Singh Jaggi on behalf of Information and Public Relations Department also shared their grief with the family while paying tribute to the departed soul.

BHAGWANT MANN CM DESCRIBES IT AS A HUGE LOSS FOR THE FAMILY 

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday expressed profound grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Prof. BC Verma, the father of Chief Secretary Anurag Verma, who passed away at Chandigarh after brief illness. He was 89 and is survived by two sons.

In a condolence message, the Chief Minister said that the death of Prof. BC Verma is a huge loss for the entire family. Bhagwant Singh Mann described Prof. BC Verma as a renowned academician who was committed to the basic human values adding that he was an illustrious personality and a fine human being with the rare qualities of head and heart. He said that the path shown by Prof. BC Verma enabled the entire family to excel in every sphere of life and serve the nation with commitment, zeal and dedication.

Sharing his heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved family, Bhagwant Singh Mann prayed to the Almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and courage to family members to bear this irreparable loss.

PROF. BC VERMA KNOWN AS GUARDIAN OF UNPRIVILEGED STUDENTS

Known for his soft-spoken, erudite and benevolent personality, many students of Prof Verma rose to distinguished positions  Eminent educationist and Professor of Chemistry Mr. BC Verma has passed  away on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at PGI for a past few days. Professor Verma was known as soft-spoken, erudite and humble personality and he chose to lead a simple life despite having all privileges. It is the result of his selfless services that God has elevated his son Mr. Anurag Verma to the post of Chief Secretary of Punjab.

Prof. BC Verma was born on April 2, 1934, in village Chalela in Patiala district. Since childhood, due to his passion for studies, he used to travelle 15 kilometers to Patiala city on his feet in his early life and later on a bicycle. After obtaining higher education in chemistry, he served as professor of chemistry at Government Mohindra College, Patiala.

Dr Gurpreet S Wander, esteemed cardiologist, is often admire and remember teachings of Prof. Verma. In addition to teaching, Verma served as an education administrator. He was the Principal of Government College Patti and Government Sports College Jalandhar and retired as deputy director of DPI colleges. Prof. B.C. Verma's wife was also a teacher and one of his sons, Anurag Verma, is currently the Chief Secretary of Punjab and the other son Ashish Verma is an advocate.

During his teaching tenure, Verma was admired by his students. In the 1980s, when the era of tuitions was at its peak, Mr. Verma even taught the needy and talented students free of cost at home after his college. He had not only moulded the character but also proved to be real architect of many students' future. Apart from helping his students in every way, he also had a sincere and positive attitude towards his support staff.

The students of Professor Verma rose to distinguished positions in various fields including civil and police officers, professors and doctors.
