CHANDIGARH MUNICIPAL CORPORATION TO HOLD ELECTIONS FOR SENIOR DEPUTY MAYOR AND DEPUTY MAYOR ON FEB.27

The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, U.T., Chandigarh, under the direction of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India and the Hon'ble Punjab and Haryana High Court, will be conducting elections for the positions of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

Following the recent judgment and directions passed by the Hon'ble Supreme Court in Civil Appeal No. 2874 of 2024 and SLP (Civil) No-2998/2024, Sh. Kuldeep Kumar has been declared as the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.

In accordance with Section 38 of the Punjab Municipal Act, 1976, the Corporation is mandated to elect one of its elected members as the Chairperson, known as the Mayor, along with other members to serve as the Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

The election meeting, as per Regulation 3(1) of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (Procedure and Conduct of Business) Regulations, 1996, will take place on:

The agenda for the meeting will focus on the election of the Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, as outlined in the relevant regulations.

Furthermore, as per the directives of the Hon'ble Punjab and Haryana High Court in CWP No.1260-2024 and CWP No.1350-2024, the Chandigarh Police will ensure adequate security measures during the election process to maintain law and order.

Detailed election procedures will be issued separately by the Secretary, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, ensuring compliance with all relevant court orders and legislative provisions.
