BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh today lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) against Punjab Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and Congress candidate Karanvir Burj from the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election for what he described as a “deliberate desecration of Sikh imagery” and a blatant attempt to politicise religion, in gross violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

Chugh took strong exception to a public meeting addressed by Bajwa and Burj during their election campaign, where a political banner displayed the revered Sikh warrior Baba Jeevan Singh Ji carrying the sacred head of the Ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, alongside six Congress leaders.

In his complaint to the ECI, Chugh said this act constituted a serious violation of the Model Code of Conduct and Section 123(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which prohibits the use of religious symbols for electoral gain.

He demanded that the Election Commission issue a show-cause notice to both Congress leaders and bar them from further campaigning in the constituency.

Chugh also urged the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer to conduct an urgent investigation into the matter and register a case against both leaders immediately.
