VIRTUAL FULL COURT REFERENCE WAS HELD THROUGH VIDEOCONFERENCING TO MOURN THE SAD DEMISE OF JUSTICE V.K.MEHROTRA

  A virtual full Court reference was held today through video conferencing to mourn the sad demise of Justice V.K.Mehrotra, former Judge of High Court of H.P. Justice Mehrotra left for his heavenly abode on 8th September, 2020 at the age of 90 years at Lucknow. Justice Mehrotra is survived by his two sons. Justice Mehrotra had served as the Judge of High Court of H.P. w.e.f. 12.05.1988 to 18.10.1992.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Justice L. Narayana Swamy said that Justice V.K.Mehrotra was an eminent jurist and great personality, but besides this he was soft spoken, polite, humble and very spiritual person with philosophical bent of mind, who held Court in a most pleasant manner, making everyone feel comfortable and at ease. After his retirement Justice Mehrotra wrote two short books on the topics `Happiness Mantra” and ``Success Mantra” which he did not want to publicize and hence only maintained for personal distribution as gifts to family and friends. Justice Narayana Swamy expressed his deep condolence to the bereaved family and said that passing away of Justice Mehrotra is not only a loss to the bereaved family but also to the entire legal fraternity.

Justice V.K. Mehrotra was born on 19.10.1930 at Jaunpur at Uttar Pradesh and was enrolled as Advocate of the Allahabad High Court on 31.12.1959. Justice Mehrotra practised mainly on the Civil side in Sales Tax matters and appeared in Writ Petitions. He practised in Jaunpur from 1954 to 1959 and from 1960 onwards he practised in Allahabad. Justice Mehrotra also remained senior Standing Counsel for the U.P. State Electricity Board since 1970 and special Counsel for Local Bodies like Ghaziabad Improvement Trust, U.P. Small Industries Corporation and several Municipal Boards.

Justice Mehrotra was appointed as Additional permanent Judge in the Allahabad High Court on 30th July 1980 and was transferred to the Himachal Pradesh High Court on 12.05.1988 and retired as such on 19.10.1992. During this period Justice Mehrotra remained Acting Chief Justice of H.P.High Court several times. After his retirement, Justice Mehrotra took over as the President of the U.P. State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission(Lucknow) in 1993 and remained as such upto 1997.

High Court, Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, Justice Sureshwar Thakur, Justice Vivek Singh Thakur, Justice Ajay Mohan Goel, Justice Sandeep Sharma, Justice Chander Bhusan Barowalia, Justice Anoop Chitkara, and Justice Jyotsna Rewal Dua also attended the Full Court Reference through video conference.The Advocate General Shri Ashok Sharma, Chairman of the Bar Council of H.P. Sh. Ramakant Sharma, President of the H.P. High Court Bar Association Sh. N.S.Chandel and the Assistant Solicitor General of India Shri Rajesh Sharma also addressed the Full Court reference through Video conference and paid tribute to Justice V.K.Mehrotra. Two minute silence was also observed as a mark of respect to the departed soul.

The Registrar General Sh. Virender Singh conducted the proceedings through video conference. The Registrars of the High Court, Advocates, officers and officials of the Registry watched the live telecast of the virtual Full Court Reference on their respective computer/mobile screens.
