FIRST CASE OF STEALING SMART BIKE, BIHAR YOUTH ARRESTED

Police reported to have arrested 21 year old youth hailing from Bihar for stealing smart bike launched by the Chandigarh administration under its public bike-sharing system.This was the first case of stealing.

The accused arrested as identified as Tuntun Kumar (21) hailing from Bihar, and unemployed. Earlier he used to work as labourer in shops.

Chandigarh administration had rolled out public bike-sharing system across the city on August 12. The electric-bicycle-sharing system is operated through the SmartBike mobile app. A rider is able to locate the closest bike station with the help of the app, unlock a bike, and ride and return the bike at any dock station. The system offers GPS-based tracking of bicycles and online collection of fare, among others.

The accused was arrested on intervening night of October 12- 13, when he was stopped by the patrolling team for checking at sector 36-37 light point. The accused was riding the Smart Bike but when questioned could not revealed how he managed to open the bike’s lock as he did not posses any mobile phone.

He told the police that he had picked up the cycle from near Sindhi Sweets sector 37D Chandigarh. A case under sections 379 and 411 of IPC in police station sector 39, Chandigarh.
