NCC REMEMBER 1965-WAR HERO MAJOR SURINDER PRASAD

The 25th Punjab Battalion of National Cadet Corps organized an impressive program at the memorial of Major Surinder Prasad, who was martyred while snatching back Indian territory from Pakistan in Khemkaran Sector during the Indo-Pak war of 1965. He was honoured with Vir Chakra posthumously in November 1966. Army and Punjab Police personnel were among hundreds of people who offered salute to the martyr.

Besides Sumit Godara, the nephew of the martyr, retired civil surgeon Dr DP Godara, Major Prashant Singh of Infantry Brigade, Administrative Officer of NCC Bn Colonel Yogesh Kumar Gandhi, laid wreaths at the memorial that had been in 1966 unveiled by Lalita Shastri, wife of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Lakha Singh from DAV College NCC unit, civil staff officer Rajiv Godara, Lekhak Parishad president Raj Sadosh, Veteran freedom fighter CR Verma’s grandson Sanjeev Verma, NCC cadets and police personnel offered flower petals at the memorial that had been renovated recently with the help of Abohar Engineers Association.

While excellently conducting the program Sirat Juneja, a cadet, said that Major Surinder Prasad was the first martyr of the Indian Army from Abohar area. He was the only son of former MLA Master Teg Ram. Aditi Nagpal and Prerna Sharma expressed their feelings towards the soldiers and officers of the army who had made supreme sacrifices for the country in the wars that were forced by some neighbouring countries.

The program was organized specially on Constitution Day under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav series. Special contingent of the NCC presented a traditional salute to the martyr as the gathering stood in reverence.
