Chandigarh (Subhash Jindal)

Punjab Government to consider petitioner’s representation for marking serial number on trees standing on sides of link roads, and those standing on Shamlat lands and other Panchayat lands in villages:

A PIL filed by lawyer H.C.Arora seeking direction to State of Punjab to mark serial number on trees standing on either side of link roads, as well as those standing on Shamlat lands and other Panchayat lands in villages, came up for hearing today before a Division Bench of High Court comprising Chief Justice and Justice Arun Palli.

The HC Bench recorded an assurance on behalf of State of Punjab to the effect that Government shall consider the aforesaid plea raised by the petitioner in his representation dated October 21st, 2021. It is pertinent to state that in his aforesaid representation, the petitioner has stated that due to not marking serial number on such trees by Gram Panchayats concerned, theft of some such trees goes unnoticed.

Likewise, a lot of corruption takes place during auction of such trees by concerned Gram Panchayats. Petitioner had also stated that trees standing on sides of National HIGH Ways, as well as State Highways are marked with serial numbers on their trunks, but the Gram Panchayats are not marking such serial number on trees standing in areas within their jurisdiction.

Panchayats records do not contain particulars of such trees. It is thus, imperative that Gram Panchayats are bestowed responsibility to mark serial number on all such trees above certain age ( say, 4 years’ age.)
