MLA Sandeep Jakhar on Wednesday met Deputy Commissioner Amarpreet Kaur Sandhu and submitted a memorandum demanding compensation for the damage caused by heavy rains in dozens of villages of Abohar and Balluana assembly constituencies.
Jakhar told the media here that in the memorandum he has listed the demands for immediate help to the affected people whose houses were completely damaged due to rain, special Girdawari of crop loss and inclusion of orchards in giving compensation.
He said that more than 75,000 acres of orchards exist in Abohar tehsil, so the same must get compensation for the loss suffered due to the rain.
Jakhar said that the rain wreaked havoc as the administration did not get the drains cleaned in time. He said that there should be a high-level inquiry into where the money received for cleaning the drain has gone. In this regard he will also meet senior officials at Chandigarh.
He said that the Drainage Department kept claiming that the Abul Khurana drain had been cleaned, but the photographs taken by the farmers on the spot in the first week of July clearly showed that the drain was filled with vegetation. The govt that claims zero tolerance against corruption, must order an inquiry into the funds that were earmarked to clean the drain but allegedly misused.
