A case bearing FIR No. 05/26 dated 04.02.2026 has been registered under Sections 318(4) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on the complaint lodged by Ms. Sonam Chauhan, R/o Krishna Nagar, Shahdara, Delhi.
As per the complaint, an unknown person, falsely impersonating an agent of Kotak Mahindra Bank, contacted the complainant on the pretext of enhancing her credit card limit and sent her an APK file via WhatsApp. Upon downloading and installing the said file, the complainant’s mobile phone was compromised, and an amount of ₹75,694/- was fraudulently debited from her Kotak Mahindra Bank credit card without her consent.
During investigation, it was revealed that the fraudster used a compromised credit card to purchase electronic and other items worth ₹75,694/- through the Zepto online portal, which were delivered to Charmwood Village, Faridabad. Technical analysis of the money trail was done and beneficiary details were received from Zepto. After getting concrete evidences, the team became able to identify and establish the linkage of suspects with this fraud. The suspects were identify as the resident of the Surajkund, Faridabad.
Further investigation disclosed that most SIM cards used in the offence were activated from a particular POS center. The POS operator stated that one SIM card was activated by Abhishek Kumar Jha and later handed over to co-accused Ashish Kumar Ojha and Vivek Kumar @ Monu. It was also revealed that Ashish Kumar Ojha, a former employee of a credit card sales company, had access to credit card customer data, which was shared with Vivek Kumar @ Monu. Using this data, a fake Kotak Mahindra Bank mobile application (malicious APK) was developed and victims were induced to download it through fraudulent calls.
During further investigation, the device used in the commission of the offence was recovered from Ikrar.
RECOVERY : Four mobile phones including the primary device used in the commission of the offence were recovered from the possession of the arrested and bound-down persons.
MODUS OPERANDI: The accused Ashish Kumar Ojha, having prior experience in the credit card department of a private company, misused confidential customer data to target victims. SIM cards were procured through associate Abhishek Kumar Jha to conceal identity. Accused Vivek Kumar @ Monu developed malicious APK files resembling genuine banking applications, which were sent to victims via WhatsApp by impersonating bank officials on the pretext of enhancing credit card limits. Upon installation of the APK file, unauthorized access to victims’ mobile phones and credit card details was obtained, which was used to make fraudulent online purchases. The procured goods were delivered to locations linked to the accused and sold through online platforms such as OLX and through offline channels, generating illegal proceeds, said Mr. Prashant Gautam, IPS, DCP, Shahdara Distt.
