The Election Commission of India (ECI) has Notified the schedule for the bye-election to the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) from Punjab, following the vacancy that arose due to the resignation of Sh. Sanjeev Arora on July 1, 2025. The term of the vacated seat is up to April 9, 2028.
According to the notification issued by the Election Commission on October 6, 2025, the bye-election will be conducted to fill the said vacancy in accordance with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and the rules framed thereunder.
As per the schedule, the Nomination process will start from 6 October and October 13, 2025 (Monday) is the Last date for filing nominations, however No nominations will be accepted on gazetted public holidays covered under section 25 of Negotiable Instrument Act.
October 14, 2025 (Tuesday): Date for scrutiny of nominations
October 16, 2025 (Thursday): Last date for withdrawal of candidature
October 24, 2025 (Friday): Date of polling (if necessary)
October 28, 2025 (Tuesday): Date before which the election process shall be completed
The polling, if required, will be held between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
In consultation with the Government of Punjab, the Election Commission has designated Ram Lok Khatana, Secretary, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Secretariat as the Returning Officer for the bye-election, and Jaswinder Singh, Deputy Secretary, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Secretariat as the Assistant Returning Officer to assist in the conduct of the election process.
