Sriganganagar farmers Amar Singh Bishnoi, Gang Canal Project former chairman Gurbalpal Singh Sandhu, Balkar Singh Hundal, Gurtej Singh Dhillon and Harry Singh Kahlon met Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to seek his intervention in the Gang Canal water Crisis.
They said that BBMB had fixed a quota of 2500 cusecs for June but only 1800 cusecs of water were being released. The receipt at Khakhan headworks was about 1050 cusecs due to widespread theft by locals in Fazilka district. The Canal Department never took up patrolling to prevent water’s theft.
The farmers then met Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal and Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian. They later had a meeting with Water Resources Department Principal Secretary Krishan Kumar and sought justice in ensuring full water.
Amar Singh Bishnoi said that the Principal Secretary has directed the officials to visit the old Bikaner Canal and examine plan to clean the same. The deputation has been assured that release of water in Gang Canal would be increased as more receipt was expected at Ferozepur headworks. The deputation was also assured that officials responsible for fluctuation in water supply will be made accountable.
