Centeral Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Anti Corruption Bureau reported to have arrested a well known lawyer and a middleman who were demanding a bribe of Rs 30 lakh in the name of a judge posted in Bathinda.
The arrested lawyer has been identified as Jatin Salwan, a resident of Sector 15, who practices in Punjab and Haryana High Court. His accomplice Satnam Singh is a property dealer by profession. Both of them were arrested by CBI from Sector 9 late Thursday night.
On Friday, they were produced before the duty magistrate and sent to Burail jail. CBI has registered a case against both of them and started investigating the matter. CBI is also investigating the role of the judge posted in Bathinda. CBI also suspects the involvement of some government officials in this case.
The CBI laid a trap to catch the lawyer. The lawyer and the middleman called the complainant to a cafe in Sector 9. The CBI team was already present there. There, the CBI caught them with Rs 4 lakhs of the first installment of the bribe amount.
According to CBI, both were demanding bribe in a divorce case. Harsimranjit Singh, a resident of Ferozepur, had lodged a complaint against them. He told that his sister's divorce case is pending in Bathinda court. Advocate Jatin Salwan demanded Rs 30 lakhs claiming to get the case decided in his favour. Meanwhile, Harsimranjit informed the CBI about this.
The CBI laid a trap to catch the lawyer. The lawyer and the middleman called the complainant to a cafe in Sector 9. The CBI team was already present there. There, the CBI caught them with Rs 5 lakhs of the first installment of the bribe amount.
The CBI also has a recording of the accused lawyer in which he is accepting the bribe amount. The accused is saying in the recording that ''' ... During the investigation, it was found that some people had hatched a conspiracy to trap Shergill, which also included the name of Advocate Salwan.
In this case, a case was registered against Salwan and others under the NDPS Act, although Advocate Salwan later got bail. This case against Salwan and other accused is pending in the High Court.
